ABOUT US

Let’s see….
We met in the spring of 2009 and on our second date we started talking about our individual dreams of one day traveling the world.  Little did we know that just two years later we’d be doing that together!  We currently “live” in Fort Collins, Colorado and celebrated our one year anniversary (in Ecuador!) on July 3.  What better way to build a marriage foundation than to experience some of the extreme highs and lows of traveling in foreign countries together?
I (Michael) am a high school math teacher and football coach.  I’m taking a one year leave of absence from teaching/coaching to go on this adventure.  For those of you wondering what a “leave of absence” entails and why your boss hasn’t clued you in on this gig…it means I go unpaid and uninsured for the year, but the district guarantees that they’ll hire me back for the following school year.  Not a bad price to pay for a year of traveling around the world.

I (Taylor) am a registered nurse at the local hospital.  I don’t have the luxury of a one-year leave of absence with my job….so I quit.  Yes, in a failing economy.  Quit.  But with “good standing”, says my boss, so I also hope to return to this position when we get back.

So we are really doing it.  Starting in June 2011, ending in July 2012, spanning 26 countries and 6 continents….we are traveling the world.  What began as a separate dream for each of us long ago is finally becoming a reality.  Countless people have asked us what made us want to do this.  So let me explain….

I (Taylor) knew it for certain when I first traveled overseas at the age of 16 on a family trip to Europe.  I remember visiting a Swiss family’s home and recognizing the simplicity around me.  The walls seemed oddly bare and the cabinets uncluttered but the stories this family told left a huge mark on me.  They told of their adventures all over the world.  They told of their ideals to live more for experience than for material things.  And then they said the words that made all the difference to me: “You can do it too!”.  I never forgot their words….and I certainly didn’t forget them in the winter of 2007 when my doctor shared the news that I was cancer-free.  After battling through 6 months of chemotherapy and 2 months of radiation (at the age of 22!) I found myself restored to that wide-eyed, youthful state of excitement and belief.  Life had taken on a new perspective for me, indeed, and I was finally starting to understand the reality that we are not promised tomorrow.  What is the value of a paid-off house and a 401K if we have never really lived along the way?  It took one date with Michael to realize that he shared this vigor for life and we can hardly believe the way the pieces have fallen into place to make this trip a reality for us.

In essence we have grown into the mentality that life has more to offer than the “American Dream”, that perhaps there are people and cultures outside of ours that have value beyond what can be learned from within our comfort zone.   We believe in a God who came to give life and life to the fullest (John 10:10), so as followers we feel our lives should reflect that.  May we face challenges?  Injuries?  Accidents?  Disasters?  Who knows!   But the alternative of living a “safe” life seems meaningless to us.  Some people think we’re crazy….we say a life without risks is no life at all!

Thanks for loving us and joining with us on this adventure!

  1. We love you two and hope you have a true adventure full of joy and your fair share of hardships that push you and stretch you into really knowing who you are as individuals and as a couple. It’s going to be one amazing experience for sure, and I can’t wait to hear all stories. Have a blast, enjoy this precious time together–because who knows when you’ll be able to spend an entire year soaking up this kind of quality time ever again. Be safe, and take a TON of pictures! Let us know if you need anything from the States while you’re out on your journey. Sometimes nothing will quite satisfy that craving for a Snickers than a Snickers!
Love you and a miss you, and we’ll see you on the flip side!

  2. Taylor and Michael,
PTL!! We will be praying for your trip and what an awesome adventure. What you described in your blog, the reasons why and how you have prepared for years, the impact the Swiss family had in your life for all this a praise. Your lifestyle is a reflection of how we all should be living. I don’t know if you have read the book “Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream” by David Platt. He is our pastor. If you have time to read it before you go it would also be great for your friends in understanding your choices.
May God protect your journey and that you both are a witness to the world.
    in His grip,
    M & F

  7. Hi Michael and Taylor, We are so touched by your courage in taking this journey and lift you up in prayer. We will pray Psalm 121 for you and encourage you to rest in its promise as you travel this beautiful earth created for us by our heavenly Father. What a fantastic opportunity to spread the Word and touch lives as you pass through many lands. May God go with you and bless every step.

  8. Hi Michael & Taylor,

Most of the time, I read posts & blogs & leave without making any remarks. I just couldn’t do that, this time.

It’s 18th August & both of you must have returned to your home safely by now. I would like to congratulate both of you for making this year-long journey a success!

Not sure, how the post-journey life will be for both of you. The last 365 days will be a treasure for the rest of your lives. I’m so glad ,that you two chose to stand out of the race of American Dream & to see what life worth living for.
It was nice to read how you narrated the cultural difference , you two has observed through out your journey.

Life, as the science describes it now, is an accident. Hence, something that originated from an accident, I agree with you, worth a little risk.

I’m from Kolkata, India & currently living at Bangalore, because of my professional involvements. I’m also looking for another meaning of my life. I hit this page on internet, while I was looking for some information on Annapurna. My plan is to reach the summit.

My best wishes to both of you for even more successful married life!

    – Regards,
    Neal

  9. Hello Taylor & Michael!

Great blog you two have! Like your stories a lot, what an amazing trip! I’m working for a tour operator which is based in Latin America and we’re mostly selling on the American market.

Now we’re working on getting this new website with tours to Peru online = http://encounterperu.com and I would like to ask to use one of your photos. While searching for great photos for the homepage slider I came across your blog and the photo of the two of you jumping with Machu Picchu in the background. It’s a very good photo!

Please let me know if we would be able to use it on our new website.

Thanks so much in advance! Have a great weekend!

  10. Tess…feel free to use our picture. We love that one ourselves. Thanks for asking.

  11. First of all, your blog is incredible. Skimming through it has given me hope that my dreams of traveling the world are possible! I spent the summer of 2012 studying in the UK, and ever since, my desire to travel has grown stronger and stronger. After I graduate from UT in December, I’d love nothing more than to take off and see the world — ideally, with someone I love.

I’m not sure if either of you recognize my name, but my family has been friends with the Fontenots for a long time. My mom actually told me about your blog in hopes that I would gain some insight into what traveling the world is really like. I’d love to maybe one day sit down with you both and talk about how you planned your trip, as well as how you managed to travel frugally… As a college student with limited funds, Lord knows I need all the tips I can get!

But seriously, your adventures amaze me! From the posts, it looks like y’all had the time of your lives. Hope all is going well for you both now that you’ve returned to the States.
